Casting your message out broadly onto the world of social platforms — that’s something entirely different in my mind."

I'm really surprised at your response here. So you think it's OK for a company who wants to promote their brand sends me a twitter message "@wcpreston check out our awesome video!" If every company felt as you do, my @ column would be full of garbage and would be completely worthless. Closed community or not, your idea of how social media should work would make it worthless, IMHO.

Hi Stephen,

Legal or not, when a vendor stoops to these tactics any semblence of transparancy is completely and irrevocably lost. From that point forward, everything said vendor says or does is suspect. For such a vendor to pretend otherwise, is pure and unadulterated hypocracy.

Thanks

@3parfarley - I saw the tweet stream you posted b/tween Barry and me:
http://search.twitter.com/search?q=dvellante+storageanarchy+bet

Luckily the statute of limitations expired on my bet because I absolutely would have paid the creator of this video. Here's the bet I made on the storage anarchist's blog WAY back in 2007!
http://thestorageanarchist.typepad.com/weblog/2007/11/0049-hds-rifs-m.html

The original Mr. T. videos done by Hitachi were very successful imo and I think using social media for awareness campaigns is a very good idea. About time other companies figured out that social media is better than flushing money down a print ad toilet.

Hi Stephen

I think we're mixing apples and oranges.

First, the clearly unacceptable: comment spam on blogs. That one was black and white, and we pulled the plug immediately.

I hope we never see that sort of thing again.

However, there's a difference between that and driving people to see a video, which is essentially an advertisement.

Everyone seems to be OK with paid ads on websites -- is there a big difference here that I'm missing?

So, in an effort to be transparent, *yes* it looks like we're trying out a variety of mechanisms to drive traffic to the video, including twitter-seeding, or whatever they call it.

You may feel that platforms like Twitter, Facebook, etc. should be relatively pure and only on-topic discussions should occur. I would disagree with that view.

Spamming a blog or a focused community -- bad juju, we all agree.

Casting your message out broadly onto the world of social platforms -- that's something entirely different in my mind.
