Live Events For The People

Nothing beats meeting in person!

In this age when video conferencing has come to the palms of our hands, not to mention our laptops, desktops, and tablets, it is tempting to be dismissive of live events. Who wants the hassle and cost of flying across the country and staying in a hotel when we can see each other wherever we happen to be? But attending events live and in the flesh is a totally different animal from online interactions. Nothing beats meeting in person, and techies more than most should get on the plane and go to events, if only to build stronger connections with their peers!

This was really brought home over the last two weeks as our own Stephen Foskett flew to Las Vegas (twice) and New York for Symantec Vision, IBM’s Storage Innovation Summit, Interop, and EMC World. The interactions we had at these events was priceless, and it will pay dividends the whole year through. We saw cool new technology and met interesting new companies as well as getting to know folks better.

One person who understands the value of personal contact is Thomas Jones, of “Coffee with Thomas” fame. Thomas understands that our back-stories are often as interesting as our day-to-day work, and he’s quick to connect on a personal level. We enjoyed sitting down with him, and turned the tables, interviewing him for a change. Watch the video below and subscribe to his podcast!

This personal connection and community-building is one reason we work so hard to put together the Tech Field Day events and spend so much time away from home. Truly, nothing beats meeting in person, and nothing beats the great folks in our community!

Raising the Floor 1: Cloud Storage Gateways

The first episode of Raising the Floor, the enterprise datacenter podcast from Foskett Services, features thought leaders from two key cloud storage-enabling companies:

  1. Josh Goldstein, VP of Marketing, Cirtas
  2. Andres Rodriguez, Founder and CEO, Nasuni

This discussion is moderated by Stephen Foskett, founder of Foskett Services.

Nasuni and Cirtas produce storage appliances that act as gateways to public cloud storage services like Amazon’s S3. Both gateways enable conventional applications to access cloud storage without the extensive modifications sometimes required.

Although similar in concept, these products differ in that Cirtas presents a block storage interface while Nasuni acts as a network-attached storage file server. Each is appropriate for different applications, but both can be used as a gateway for production applications as well as the archiving and content distribution normally associated with cloud storage.

Watch the video now, subscribe to the text feed or to the podcast in iTunes! We will be posting a transcript of the discussion at Foskett Services as well.

Note: Unless you have the QuickTime video plugin installed, the video wants to download before playing. Here’s a streamable Vimeo link instead:

We are working on repairing the video streaming now!

Introducing “Raising the Floor”, Our Datacenter Podcast

Foskett Services is pleased to announce our new podcast!

The first episode has just been recorded, featuring Nasuni and Cirtas! We’ll be in iTunes shortly, or subscribe to our RSS feed!

Raising the Floor

Raising the Floor is a series of conversations with key industry figures focused on the future of enterprise IT. We envision a talk show format with moderation and guidance from Stephen Foskett.

The name comes from the raised floor that literally supports most data center environments and is intended to suggest progress in this space. We intend to raise the bar of conversation, probing serious topics rather than chatting about the industry.

Subscribe in iTunes (coming soon!) or via RSS

How It Works

Raising the Floor is short, focused, and topical. Each podcast will be 20 minutes or less in length, and Stephen Foskett will keep the discussion moving with pointed questions and analysis. We will focus on uses and strategy rather than product-oriented discussions, and will involve key industry insiders.

Raising the Floor relies on an interview format, with a few invited guests joining the discussion on a regular basis. We will record audio as well as video when possible, and may offer both formats in the future.

Join the Conversation

Please contact Stephen Foskett via email or Twitter if you would like to be involved in the podcast.

This podcast is sponsored by Nasuni, “the gateway to cloud storage”.
